What are Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)?

Adverse Childhood Experiences (or ACEs) refer to different types of abuse, neglect, or household dysfunctions, such as parental mental illness, family violence, or parental separation, an individual experiences prior to age 18. These experiences are significant for three reasons:

  1. ACEs are widespread: more than 50% of U.S. adults have experienced at least one ACE.
  2. They make us sick: ACEs increase the risk for mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, and physical health issues, such as cancer, asthma, and heart disease.
  3. Awareness is low: despite extensive research about the prevalence and health impact of ACEs few survivors are aware of—let alone address—their psychological vulnerabilities

The THRIVE program sets out to change the trajectory of women ACE survivors by increasing awareness of the lasting (and often life-long) mental health impact of ACEs and how they may address these vulnerabilities through evidence-based interventions.
